Centre for the Arts and Learning invites you to a seminar by Professor John Matthews, Visiting Research Fellow, Department of Psychology, University of Portsmouth, England.

Professor John Matthews is an artist and educator with teaching experience at nursery, primary and secondary level, as well as at art school and university level. His research work is about the origin and development of representation, expression and symbolism in early childhood. His work started with highly detailed, longitudinal studies of his own three children, from birth to adolescence. He has also studied 40 children, made over a two-year period, in a London nursery class, when he was their teacher. His recent research, conducted over an 18-year period, in Singapore, includes studies of Chinese, Malay and Indian children’s representation, expression and symbolism in a range of media including electronic media and videography. In addition, Matthews studied a group of chimpanzees in Singapore Zoo over a 3 year period.

For many years Dr. Matthews lectured at Goldsmiths College, University of London, in the School of Arts, in Early Years Education and in Post Graduate Art Education, before he took up a post at National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

John Matthews have publications on early childhood development and art. Some of his work has been translated into Spanish and Chinese Mandarin.
