John Hilliard is an English conceptual artist whose ongoing body of work addresses the uncertainty of photography as a representational device, and its status within the visual arts in relation to painting, cinema and commercial photography. Colour photography in popular culture, especially its use in targeting desired results in advertising and media, has been the subject of his semiotic scrutiny, leading to his more recent works of mural scale. His work continues to present the viewer with a critical commentary on the viewing process itself.
