The Research Office is pleased to announce a presentation by Professor Andrea R. Halpern entitled ' The Rhetoric of the Grant Proposal'. All research engaged staff and students are welcome to attend.

Writing grant proposals involves not only having a great idea but also packaging the idea so as to have the maximum impact and persuasion. In this talk, Andrea will discuss the proposal as a piece of writing. Like all writing, one needs to consider the type of audience, your purpose in writing, and the audience’s purpose in reading.

Andrea will present three important rhetorical goals of exposition, persuasion, and credentialing that she thinks can characterize proposals from nearly any discipline. She'll present a generic outline of a proposal and consider how each major section of a proposal matches up with the rhetorical goals.

Andrea will also discuss a few tools that are useful in maximising the success of your proposal writing. Time will be left for Q&A and discussion.

Biography speaker, Professor Andrea R. Halpern:

Since receiving her PhD in Psychology from Stanford University she has taught and conducted research at Bucknell University, a largely undergraduate liberal arts university in Pennsylvania. She has spent sabbatical leaves in Montreal, Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas, and currently, in London. She studies memory for non-verbal information, particularly music, using both behavioural and neuroimaging methods, in young adult musicians and non-musicians, and in the context of both healthy aging and neurodegenerative disease. In addition to teaching and mentoring undergraduate researchers, she serves as a proposal writing consultant both at Bucknell and with the Council on Undergraduate Research, an education and advocacy group fostering research at undergraduate institutions. She has received grants from US federal and private agencies and currently serves as President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition.
