From the Magic Lantern through the Avant-garde to Anime

Through a historical prism going back to pre-cinematic devices, this talk traces an alternative trajectory of the engines that are driving Japanese cinema – its differentiation from its own cultural predecessors as well as from Western cinema.

Keisuke Kitano is Professor at the College of Image Arts and Science, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan, and currently Visiting Research Fellow at Media & Communications, Goldsmiths. He is the author of numerous books and essays on film and visual culture, including Eizoron-Jyosetu [Introduction to Theories on Visual Image] (Jinbunshoin, 2009).

The event is free and open to all
