The Loop and Olympia

Tin Shed is pleased to announce that its first major exhibition of 2013 will feature recent work by the internationally recognised artist and Goldsmiths alumna Wendy McMurdo. The gallery will be screening two of McMurdo’s recent video works on alternate days, The Loop and Olympia.

The Loop (2009), directed by McMurdo and Paul Holmes, was originally created as part of The Skater project for Ffotogallery in Cardiff. The project examined the psychology of the gamer, with a particular focus on the effect of technology on the playing habits of young people and the importance of the avatar in their virtual interactions. The Loop follows a young girl attempting to mimic the actions of a figure skater on the neighbouring screen, highlighting the desire to play and explore in both physical and digital realms.

Olympia (2010) is one outcome of a two-year project by McMurdo exploring the growth of social and humanoid robotics research in the UK and beyond. Shot at research facilities and museums around the world, the resulting series of works uses video and photography to explore how our willingness to engage with technology creates new relationships to machines.

This short film, shot on location at Bristol Robotics lab, places humanoid robots at its core depicting them with emotion and beauty; raising questions about the bonds we might form with machines.

Tin Shed is supported by donors to the Goldsmiths Annual Fund.
