Artist Emma Smith will explore practices by which we inhabit and create place, proposing present tense tactics including collaboration, imagination, friendship, lingering, play and oscillation.

Emma Smith is an artist based in London, UK. She has a performative and participatory art practice that is both research and production based. Using an inter-disciplinary approach, Smith creates sites for activity through installations, events, performance and play to explore the inter-relation of people and place. Looking in particular at tacit forms of knowledge, Smith regularly collaborates as part of her process and works through the bringing together of multi-disciplinary teams.
Smith works nationally and internationally including exhibitions at Camden Arts Centre (2006), Whitechapel Gallery (2007 & 2008), Wysing Arts Centre (2010, 2011 & 2012), Grizedale Arts (2010-12), Artsadmin (2011 & 2012), The Showroom (2011) and Tate Modern (2011), UK, with international projects in Canada, the Canadian Arctic, China, Italy, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Mauritius and Spain. Most recent exhibitions include Tate Modern Tanks (2012), Arnolfini (2013) and Matadero Madrid (2013).
Published work includes Golden Threads published in English and Arabic (2012); On In + An One in ‘Manifesta Journal’ (Feb 2012); What does Community Mean? in ‘Gallery as Community: Art, Education, Politics’, Whitechapel Gallery (2012); Community, in ‘Community Without Propinquity’ (2011); and Communal Knowledge in ‘The New and Renewed Museum’ (2011).
Smith was artist fellow of The Showroom (2010-2011) and Artsadmin Bursary Artist 2010-2011). Smith is currently resident in the ACME Fire Station Residency Programme (2010-2015) and Associate Artist of Artsadmin.
