Event overview
Neo-liberalism’s influence on education systems in Europe has now entered its third decade. Since 2008, the demands of ‘austerity’ have been added to the policy mix. In this situation, what kinds of restructuring are taking place – and what kinds of conflict accompany them?
This seminar will bring together contributions from Belgium, England, France, Greece, Italy and Spain. It will aim to develop an analysis of national restructurings, and to consider the role of the EU and of national states in bringing them about. It will explore the forms taken by the politics and ideologies of education across Europe.
In the process, it will ask what, if anything, is peculiar to England: is the English mix of traditionalism and accelerated marketisation an exception within Europe, and if so, what are the conditions that have given rise to it?
The seminar will be based on papers from academics and social movement activists, including Rosa Cañadell , General Secretary of the education trade union, USTEC, Catalonia; Guy Dreux, co-author of La Nouvelle École Capitaliste and a member of the Research Institute of the main education union in France, the FSU; Nico Hirtt of the Appel pour une école démocratique in Belgium; Rosalind Innes, University of Basilicata.
This is the fourth in a series of seminars organised jointly by the School of Education at Birmingham City University and the Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.
