Event overview
As part of the Made in Goldsmiths series, Ivan Coleman of our Department of Art will be showcasing his work in an exhibition titled 'In Country'.
In Country:
The British countryside as entertainment.
Since somewhere near the middle of the twentieth century, the tipping point at which more than 50% of all of us began to live in towns and cities, rural England has seen it’s steep and continuing demographic decline as a working landscape and home of ‘the working man’.
From having once being an essential support mechanism for the majority population, in a globalised industrial economy it has been priced out of business and become dependent on EU farming subsidies.
Even in our financial crisis hit times, leisure is still a large-scale industry. One of the few remaining ways that English countryside communities have of supporting themselves and their dependent populace is through their ability to entertain, engage and impress new visitors.
The fight to maintain a local, social identity against these forces of homogenization has, in many cases, been undertaken through the dogged, annual continuation of old rites and festivals, deeply rooted in history and tradition. Alternatively, in communities with less celebrated annual events, sometimes a manufacturing, industry background since dwindled, decommissioned or completely departed, it has been in the invention of new events, spectacles and museums bringing in the much needed tourist Dollar/Euro/Yuan to enable financial survival.
Having been raised simultaneously between London and several corners of the English countryside, ever the outsider, I have always been fascinated by how these different communities view themselves and their positions amongst one another.
Hopefully these pictures of a small selection of, historical and contemporary, rural events and landscapes, that have been or have recently become important to these pastoral communities, but less familiar or even completely alien to their urban counterparts, offer a glimpse, at a version of the English countryside.
