Event overview
In honour of Ada Lovelace Day, the Goldsmiths Textile Collection presents: Dorothy Benson and Machine Embroidery
Dorothy Benson (1902-1977) worked for the Embroidery Department of the Singer Sewing Machine Company from the age of 14 until her retirement forty-four years later in 1960.
Beginning as a “Little One” that swept up the shop floor and ran errands, Benson rose through the ranks at Singer from trainee embroiderer to head of the department, taking on the additional responsibilities of business development and education. During her illustrious career with Singer, she published the educational book Your Machine Embroidery (1954) and was featured regularly in the Singer house journal Red S Review.
The display includes Benson’s original sketches and samples including a selection of her felt work and a table centre that she machine-embroidered for the 1948 Empire Exhibition in Glasgow.
Curated by Jenny Doussan and Lizzie Cannon with special thanks to Carole Thompson and Margaret Hall-Townley.
