Book launch with the author of 'The Muslims are Coming', Arun Kundnani
The Edward Snowden revelations have highlighted the extent to which national security agencies carry out global surveillance. But the resulting public debate has ignored the actual impacts of such surveillance on "suspect communities" targeted within the US and the UK - especially young Muslims - and the resulting restrictions on dissent.
On both sides of the Atlantic, the War on Terror has turned inwards in recent years, focusing on the “homegrown enemy,” and giving rise to sprawling structures of discriminatory policing and surveillance. Undergirding such policies are official accounts of "radicalization" and "extremism" that fail to grasp the causes of political violence; meanwhile public intellectuals legitimise liberal forms of Islamophobia. Arun Kundnani introduces his new book The Muslims are Coming! Islamophobia, Extremism, and the Domestic War on Terror, published by Verso. Based on several years of research and reportage from Texas and New York to Yorkshire, it is the first comprehensive critique of counter-radicalization strategies. Kundnani's previous book, The End of Tolerance: Racism in 21st Century Britain, was selected as a New Statesman book of the year in 2007. A former editor of the journal Race & Class, he now teaches at New York University.
