MSc CGE: Games Industry Seminar Series 2013-14

Talk Title:
From Art to Avatar: explorations of complexity

Brief overview of talk:
This talk will reflect on 20 years of work in computer graphics, comparing experiences in commercial production (such as Walking with Dinosaurs, Avatar and The Matrix: Reloaded and Revolutions) with personal artistic exploration. A consistent theme has been how to use digital technology to explore and harness systems with extreme levels of complexity. What makes good tools for both artists and technicians to use, and what are the different needs of film production and artistic exploration?

Brief biog:
Andy Lomas is a digital artist and Emmy award winning supervisor of computer generated effects. His artwork explores the nature of how complex organic structures can be created by the simulation of growth processes. He career has included working as Head of Computer Graphics at Framestore and Head of Character Effects at Dreamworks Animation. He is currently working at The Foundry as the Product Manager for Katana, a tool used by studios such as Pixar, ILM, Sony Imageworks and MPC to handle the look development and lighting of very complex shots.
