London’s 21st Century take on Chinese Revolutionary Opera reintroducing Boris Johnson as the White Haired Boy

Taking on the tradition of the Revolutionary Model Opera and conceived as part of the MA Art and Politics at Goldsmiths, University of London, White Haired boy follows Boris Johnson’s time in office as the Mayor of London, from the pre-Olympic hey-days through the 2011 riots to the generation’s resulting disenchantment; White Haired Boy is a piece of performance art featuring costumes, set, music and choreography entirely curated by the MA students. The performance makes a commentary on the intricacies of British politics and bridges the Chinese Opera Model in a manner that renders it relevant to London’s contemporary society.

The Chinese Revolutionary Opera, otherwise known as the Model Opera, was created as part of the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960’s. Stemming from this tradition, The White Haired Girl was one of the leading operas in accordance to Mao Tse-tung’s vision and became a reference point for national popular art in China whilst serving as a vehicle for the ideological transformation of the time.
