Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Danny Driver performs works by Chopin, York Bowen and Ligeti in this free lunchtime concert as part of the Department of Music's PureGold season.

Programme:
Chopin: Ballade no. 1 in G minor Op. 23
York Bowen: Preludes in E flat major, E minor, G major, B flat minor (from Op 102)
Chopin: Ballade no. 3 in A flat major Op. 47
György Ligeti: Galamb Borong, Fém, En Suspens, L'éscalier du Diable (Études, Book 2)
Chopin: Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise Op. 22

Concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician, Danny Driver is known internationally for the exceptional quality of his performances and recordings, the imagination and breadth of his repertoire, and for the individuality of his interpretations of core repertoire works and neglected masterpieces. Critics have praised his ‘bold, exuberant and precise’ performances [The Guardian], ‘impeccable technique and musicianship’ [Gramophone], and ‘poise, power, and passion’ [BBC Music Magazine].

Recent orchestral highlights have included performances of Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican Centre and Symphony Hall in Birmingham, concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra (Tchaikovsky), American Symphony Orchestra (Saint-Saëns), Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto at Hong Kong’s City Hall, and his BBC Proms début with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2011. Conductors with whom Driver has collaborated include Andrew Litton, Richard Farnes, Martyn Brabbins, Leon Botstein, Johannes Fritzsch, Rory Macdonald, Rebecca Miller, Christopher Warren-Green, and Bramwell Tovey.

As a Hyperion recording artist, Danny has won consistent international acclaim for his recordings, including a 2010 Gramophone Award Nomination for his double-disc of York Bowen’s six Piano Sonatas. His subsequent recording of CPE Bach Keyboard Sonatas was selected by National Public Radio (USA) as one of the Top Ten Classical CDs of 2010, as well as being singled out by Gramophone Magazine (Editor’s Choice), International Piano Magazine, and the Daily Telegraph (five stars). His recording of Scottish composer Erik Chisholm’s Piano Concertos (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conductor Rory Macdonald) was released in 2012 and selected by BBC Music Magazine as Orchestral Disc of the Month. Forthcoming releases are to include piano works by Handel and Schumann.
