As part of the Department of Music's PureGold season, we present an evening recital by MMus graduate Ian J Munro (percussion)

Scottish percussionist and recent Goldsmiths graduate Ian J. Munro performs a recital of new works for solo percussion composed by Minna Nygren, Polly Hewett and himself.

This evening’s performance is dedicated to the memory of the Professor Alexander Ivashkin. Ian J Munro writes: Professor Alexander Ivashkin (Sasha) was one of the most respected members on the faculty of music at Goldsmiths. It was a great privilege to study under one of the world’s leading musicians and authorities on Russian music. Sasha encouraged all of his students giving us some incredible performance opportunities. “Ian is a percussionist, use him” was how he introduced me to my peers during our introductory meeting in October 2011. Performing one of the solo percussion parts in Sofia Gubaidulina’s 'Canticle of the Sun' under his direction was a particular honour. He was always approachable, encouraging and fond of the students in his care. After a mock recital he asked “Ian, do you drink? Next time, have some before you play”! I’ll never forget that moment, which is why this recital ends with the English air “Drink to me Only”. His enthusiasm for music not to mention his awesome musicianship, easy ability to inspire all who played or sang under his direction, his no nonsense approach and terrific one-liners “it is ready for CD” he’d say after an ensemble coaching session made him a joy and an inspiration to play for and study with. He inspired not just me but so many other students and for that we each owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Goldsmiths without Sasha is unthinkable, but the man and the memories will live with us forever. Sasha, it was a pleasure.
