Event overview
ICCE Open Lecture
Singapore is still considered to be a city-state with the so-called "controlled freedom". It was much easier for the ruling elite of Singapore to control the flows of information and spaces of potential forums in 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. In the last decades, since Internet and social media opened up the spaces that are not so easy to control, the holes in the system started to appear. In spite of it's undisputed economic and development success, these changes brought to the surface the need of Singapore to have a society more open to dissonant voices, that eventually lead to innovative solutions and strategies. In the talk, a number of case studies from Singapore’s art scene will be presented, from the famous cases of visual artist Josef Ng and theater company Wild Rice, to "Sticker Lady" Samantha Lo, cartoonist Leslie Chew, and film makers Boo Junfeng and Tan Pin Pin, covering aesthetics, cultural studies, arts management and cultural policy.
