Exhibition of archive material on former Goldsmiths Warden and cultural theorist Richard Hoggart (1918-2014).

Richard Hoggart was the warden of Goldsmiths between 1976 and 1984.

He was the first literary critic to take the working class seriously. He also played a critical role in the founding of Cultural Studies and in fundamental changes to how English and Media are studied. All three subject areas now thrive at Goldsmiths, and enjoy a global reputation.

Hoggart was also a star witness for the defence at the obscenity trial of DH Lawrence’s ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ in 1957.

Writing about his work in his autobiography, he said:

”The main currents of my interests have been: the right of wider access to higher education, the need for wider access also to the arts as the most scrupulous explorations we can make of our personalities and relationships, and of the nature of our societies; and, as a support to all this, the best uses of mass communications.”

Exhibition in collaboration with and containing material from: Goldsmiths, Special Collections and Archives, The University of Sheffield, Special Collections, The University of Bristol, Special Collection: Penguin Archive and Penguin Books.
