NEWSROOM ETHNOGRAPHY: New Struggles, Old Ideals
Inside the newsrooms of the biggest TV stations in the UK and Denmark
The lecture will be based on Dr Line Hassall Thomsen's 18-month long fieldwork at the TV stations BBC, ITV (in the UK) and DR and TV2 (in Denmark). The lecture will give concrete examples of how methods of anthropology are particularly useful for studying journalism as a profession. Exploring the primary findings of the study it will be shown how journalists today are finding themselves caught between their professional ideals and the market logic of media competition.
Dr. Line Hassall Thomsen is a lecturer at the Centre for University Studies in Journalism, Aarhus University, Denmark. Her PhD was part of a national Public Service Broadcasting research group. The study was funded partly by Update at the Danish Journalism School, Aarhus University and the Danish Research School of Media, Communication and Journalism.?
