In 2015, the European Capitals of Culture celebrate their 30th anniversary. Steve Green will provide a critical overview and his insights into the programme.

The ECOC programme is 30 years old. The demand from cities to hold the title shows no sign of abating, already over 15 cities in Germany are planning bids for the 2025 title. In this talk and discussion Steve will outline the current objectives and process and critique the programme from the standpoint of the various stakeholders.
Steve Green is the chair of the selection and monitoring panel for the European Capital of Culture programme. He has been a member of the panel since 2012 and been involved with 15 ECOCs and 45 other cities as candidates. He was consultant to the European Commission, Parliament and national governments as they drew up the rules for the competition from 2020 to 2033.
He is the author of the Guide to Candidate Cities issued by the European Commission and the principal author of the panels reports, most recently on the pre selection for the title in Croatia in 2020.
Prior to this Steve had a 35 year career in international cultural relations with EUNIC and the British Council. He is a member of the European House for Culture and a FRSA.
