Event overview
To launch the newly formed Disability Research Centre (DRC) at Goldsmiths, University of London, a public debate will take place about the most pressing issue of the day for disabled people, welfare cutbacks and retrenchment. The debate, which will be followed by a drinks reception, is free and open to everyone, but preregistration is required through Eventbrite.
The DRC will be launched by Baroness Jane Campbell, whose work is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the rights of disabled people. Baroness Campbell is Co-Chair, with Anne McGuire MP, of the All Party Parliamentary Disability Group, who were responsible for a Private Members Bill that was incorporated in the Government's Care Act, and lead debates on the closure of the Independent Living Fund. Baroness Campbell continues to revise and amend legislation that takes forward equality and human rights in every aspect of British life.
The public debate explores disability in austere times and particularly how the closure of the Independent Living Fund under a conservative British government has changed the lives of disabled people. State governance and power form the focus of our discussion as we attempt to think through some of the lived political and human implications of austerity measures for disabled people. The discussion is initiated by Professor Dan Goodley (University of Sheffield) and respondents will be Professor Lisa Blackman (Goldsmiths, University of London), Andrew Power (University of Southampton), and Monica Greco (Goldsmiths University of London). The presentations are followed by up to 50 minutes of debate prompted by audience questions and comments.
