Event overview
Early modern Naples was vibrant and complex; its milieu animated and rich. It was a multicultural and socially diverse city. Naples was also characterised by religious dissent. Despite the strict control exercised by authorities on the press and the circulation of ideas, dissent spread throughout Neapolitan society: from high to low. This enhanced the circulation of prohibited books and new ideas which often pushed the boundaries of religious conformity. Heresy cases targeted not just Muslims and Jews but also the sexual practises of Catholics priests, preachers and nuns. I will be looking specifically at Inquisition records and through these challenging a long-held scholarly tradition which has depicted Naples as a stronghold of Counter-reformation culture, typically characterized by religious orthodoxy both in public and private.
