' "We Shall Not be Free Until South Africa is Free..." Come and hear why this slogan captured the hearts and minds of communities in 1980s Britain.

A new book by Dr Elizabeth Williams, Subject Librarian based in the Library at Goldsmiths explores the often unremarked parallels between the black British and black South African experience of the 1960s-80s. Here Elizabeth introduces ‘The Politics of Race in Britain and South Africa’ (IB Tauris, 2015) and explains the “visceral connection” between black South Africans and black communities in the UK.

Dr Williams will be joined by Professor Jane Powell, Dr Hilary Sapire, Professor David Killingray, Caroline Lloyd (Assoc-Director of Library & Research Services), Professor Joan Anim-Addo, Professor Heidi Mirza. There will be a special performance by Catford South African Choir.
