This paper will look at some of the legitimating strategies for the Estense dukes of Ferrara in the fifteenth century. It will outline how Leonello, Borso and Ercole d'Este tried to legitimate their hold on power through the use of genealogy. It will consider a range of visual and textual evidence to argue that these three successive rulers in the fifteenth century adopted a number of strategies to place themselves as the rightful heirs of Niccolo III d'Este. Focus will fall particularly on the reign of Ercole as it was during this time that the succession conflict finally was resolved.

Please note, this event has been rescheduled from 10 February to 16 March.
