“An overwhelming amount of information”: Exploring repetition in the performance of Milton Babbitt’s music”
This presentation reports on the progress of a performance-as-research project involving guitar music by Milton Babbitt. A discussion of the related context, video clips of the project preparation, performance and listener reactions form part of this presentation. Brian and Jon will also perform ‘Soli e Duettini’ (1989) in its original form.
Jon Rattenbury is an active guitarist and music educator. He has wide experience as a performer on electric and classical guitar and as a music tutor. Brian Ashworth works in Brighton as a guitar, bass, drum kit and ukulele teacher. He also travels internationally as a performer, presenter, and educator.
The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community, all over a glass of wine! Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
