Department of Art Public Talks Programme Summer 2016 welcomes artist Claire Makhlouf Carter.

Contemporary Art Talks: Claire Makhlouf Carter

Claire Makhlouf Carter’s performative, time-based events, which highlight the problems of labour relations and power dynamics in social situations, have employed temporary workers such as sniffer dogs, cloakroom attendants, military mercenaries, fairground workers, mafrish owners, forensic psycho-physiologists and carpet pickers. Using an interruptive form which she terms ‘organised gatecrashing’ she draws out the internalized and embodied complexities of institutional relations sometimes making existing conflicts visible. Carter has performed in a range of sites from art openings, cross-channel ferries, seminars, conferences and a welding tent in a chili festival. Methods are performed and made transparent in her scripts.

Recent performance events include DEMO SAFE (Are You Allergic to the 21st Century? HOME, Manchester 2015) DEMO SKOYLES (Eastside Projects, Birmingham 2015) DEMO DISTRACTION (Learning Resource, TATE Modern 2014) DEMO KHAT (DIG London / Institutional Loser Symposium, Private Residence & PhD exam CSSD / Performance: Anthology Live, Camden Arts Centre / 2014 - 2013) DEMO DE FABRIEK (The Scene Changes to an Empty Room De Fabriek, Eindhoven, Netherlands 2012) DEMO PENFOLD STREET (Confrontational Perspectives The Showroom Gallery, London 2012). Collaborative work includes A Contract with a Heckler performed at five conferences 2013. Carter is a founding member of SPV Ltd.
