Two filmed movement responses by student Mahisha Nadidu
The use of dance and movement as a reflective tool is core to the training in Dance Movement Psychotherapy. The filmed movement response is just one way that students develop this skill.
Here are two of Mahisha's filmed movement responses, alongside a description that explains each piece:
"My movement response portrays the journey I have have been through with the experimentation of self exploration, throughout the course. It starts off with myself walking down the path I have taken, after which it shows the inner struggle I face between wanting to tap into my world of emotions and wanting to be safe in my cocoon, at the same time.
I begin to test the waters, although afraid, and eventually allow myself to come out of this shell. Although I hold this sense of comfort close to me, I begin to try forming relationships, as this shell slowly moves further and further away. That was my journey."
"My movement response shows my struggle to stay with the messy, uncomfortable parts of the therapeutic alliance. Initially, it shows, what feels to me, like a constant battle between, myself, the therapist, and my clients.
I portray my need for structure, perfection and neatness, while often what is brought into sessions are unorganised and messy thoughts, feelings and emotions. This struggle goes on, as finally, I allow myself to stay with what is in the room; to stay with the uncomfortable; to stay with the mess."
