To do so, this approach does not assume ex ante the political-economic aggregations that are relevant in a given context, such as classes or industry-based interest groups. Rather, it explores which aggregations are made possible by a given economic structure.

It goes on to study which aggregations might emerge in specific situations out of those which are possible, and what conflicts could arise.

This approach shows that which aggregations emerge depends on how actors represent economic structure and their position therein, and hence what they understand their interests to be.
