Event overview
Dennis Bovell is a producer, Dub Master, Lover's Rock pioneer, Sound Engineer, Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and performer.
Tonight he talks to Les Back (Sociology) about his long career working with many important acts such as his band Matumbi, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Alpha Blondy, Janet Kay (Silly Games), Edwyn Collins, Joss Stone, The Pop Group, Golden Teacher and many more. He will select his favourite records and he will reflect on them and the stories behind the music.
In 1980, he wrote the ground-breaking score for Franco Rosso's important film Babylon. The film set in New Cross documented the triumphs and hardships of a group of young black people who were running a local sound system. It featured Lewisham sound system legend Jah Shaka and is arguable the most compelling account of the everyday struggles of young black people during the 1980s ever captured on film.
