Edmund Gordon talking about his acclaimed new biography of Angela Carter

Angela Carter’s life was as rich with incident, as vigorously modern, as unconventional, as dark, and ultimately as tragic as anything in her fiction. For this meticulously researched literary biography, Edmund Gordon had unrestricted access to her manuscripts and journals, conducted numerous interviews with Carter’s family and friends and travelled to the places she lived in, in Britain, Japan and the USA. As well as providing a fresh perspective on Britain’s social and cultural history in the second half of the twentieth century, The Invention of Angela Carter is the first full biography of one of the most important British writers of the twentieth century.

'A brilliantly researched, astute and fascinating account of the growth and emergence of one of the most heroic figures in modern fiction' (Colm Tóibín) ‘This fascinating, highly readable biography will be extremely hard to beat’ (Sunday Times), ‘[A] gripping biography, brimming with new material (Financial Times), ‘industrious and intelligent’ (Times), ‘elegant and subtle’ (Daily Telegraph), ‘an exemplary piece of work…Everyone should read it’ (Spectator).

Edmund Gordon has written for the Guardian, Observer, London Review of Books, Times Literary Supplement and the Sunday Times. He lives in London, and teaches literature and creative writing at King’s College London. This is his first book.
