Abstract
Suggestion and suggestibility play an instrumental role in a diverse array of psychological phenomena including anomalous experiences, the formation of false memories, and response to placebo and hypnosis. Despite their importance, suggestion and suggestibility are neglected topics in contemporary psychological science and our understanding of their characteristics and mechanisms is relatively poor. Here I will provide a broad overview of the constructs of suggestion and suggestibility – what they refer to, how they can be measured, and their clinical and scientific implications and limitations. I will further describe current knowledge of the characteristics of highly suggestible individuals and some of the candidate neurocognitive mechanisms underlying suggestion. Although our understanding of these phenomena remains in its infancy, the available evidence speaks to their broad importance across many areas of psychology, medicine, and neuroscience.
