O, What a Disgusting War! The Oral Sense in Extremis: Stories of the Great War

Goldsmiths welcomes Professor Frank Krause to perform his Inaugural lecture.

The lecture explores rhetorical uses of disgust in stories about the First World War. With reference to French, English, and German literature, it shows how motifs of ingestion in ‘atmospheres’ of rot and decay are used to convey an ethical sense of heroic commitment, alarmed despair, moral outrage, or joie de vivre.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
