Richard Hoggart Lecture Series presents: The Uses of Shopping: : Richard Hoggart goes to Woolworth's. Lecture by Rachel Bowlby

From 'The Uses of Literacy', all the way to the many autobiographical works of his retirement years, Richard Hoggart wrote about shops and shopping. This lecture will look at the changing shopping experiences that Hoggart describes, and the distinctiveness of this lifelong enthusiasm for a man of his time and places.

Rachel Bowlby has written several books on consumer culture, including 'Carried Away', 'Shopping with Freud', and, most recently, 'Talking, Walking: Essays in Cultural Criticism'. Rachel is a Professor of Comparative Literature at UCL.
