Event overview
Part of the How to do sociology with… series
Glitter is ubiquitous. From crafting to make-up, vagazelling to glitter bombing, fashion to fish, glitter is everywhere. Glitter also gets everywhere. It sticks to what it is and isn’t intended to, and travels beyond its original uses, eliciting affects and emotions from delight to irritation.
In this workshop, we will work with glitter to explore what it does, materially and affectively. We will ask how we might cultivate methodologies with it, and what these might do to sociological research.
Beckie Coleman is Reader in the Sociology Department, Goldsmiths, where she researches and teaches across sociology, media and cultural studies, and feminist theory, focusing on bodies, images, presents and futures, and inventive methodologies. She is currently writing a book provisionally called Glitterworlds: The Future Politics of a Ubiquitous Thing.
Jayne Osgood is Professor of Education (Early Years & Gender) based at the Centre for Education Research & Scholarship, Middlesex University. Her present methodologies and research practices are framed by feminist new materialism. One strand of her current research is on early childhood ‘things’, including noodles, lego and glitter (see her academia.edu page for forthcoming papers).

Part of the How to do sociology with… series, which explores how we do sociology with specific materials, media, devices, objects and atmospheres, and what happens when these things become the focus of our attention.
