Critical Perspectives on Promotional Culture Seminar Series: Dr Ramamurthy will discuss how best to understand the legacy of colonialism in contemporary advertising.
Dr Anandi Ramamurthy will discuss her book Imperial Persuaders: Images of Africa and Asia in British Advertising. (2003, MUP) The book explores the ways in which manufacturers exploited the image of Africa and Asia to sell consumer products during the colonial era and highlights the ways in which these racialised representations frequently elided with quite specific economic and political interests of companies. Dr Ramamurthy will consider how effectively her methodology could be applied to the study of late twentieth or twenty first century advertising.
