Blue Door Press, the literary imprint set up by Goldsmiths' creative writers, launch a novel and poetry collection.
Come and raise a glass to celebrate the launch of two new titles published by Blue Door Press: Francis Gilbert's novel Snow on the Danube and Jane Kirwan's The Goose Woman. The Word Bookshop will host this event with drinks at 6.30pm, Thursday, March 28th followed by readings from both works at 7pm, followed by a Q and A. Other great titles from the Blue Door Press stable will be on sale as well.
Snow on the Danube (Francis Gilbert, a novel)
Béla has grown up in a cramped East London flat with his great uncle, once a Hungarian count; as far as he’s concerned his elderly relative is eccentric and annoying. But when his great-uncle dies, Béla is bequeathed a mysterious manuscript – a manuscript that reveals a completely different side to the count. For the first time Béla learns about the horrors his great uncle had to endure during the Second World War.
Snow on the Danube evokes the lost world of Budapest during and between two great wars -- and is recounted in the inimitable voice of Count Zoltán Pongrácz: a fussy hypochondriac who becomes an unlikely and compromised hero when the Fascists take over his beloved country and he is forced to rescue his adored, wayward sister Anna. An unlikely comedy, a document of filial love and a compelling portrait of the horrors of war, Snow on the Danube is the story of one man's quest to save ever thing he loves most --- and, perhaps, soul.
The Goose Woman (Jane Kirwan, poetry collection)
Nearly 20 years ago, after a casual yes, why not, Jane Kirwan and Aleš Macháček moved from sofas and central heating in North London to a ruin in Central Bohemia. No electricity or water or weasel-free space to sleep. The spirit of the space was then and is still – long after her death – a goose woman. She weaves in and out of these poems, connecting the place to the poet’s roots in the West of Ireland; she is there as they build, transform, make a home, she’s there as they get older, become grandparents, and she is mostly quiet, only the occasional cackle.
