Voices from the Edge with Bernadine Evaristo and Season Butler

Bernardine Evaristo’s novel Girl, Woman, Other, which is on the shortlist for this year’s Booker prize, follows the lives of 12 very different people – mostly women, mostly black. Season Butler’s debut novel, Cygnet, tells the story of a teenage girl living on an island populated by the elderly. Both are triumphs of narrative voice. They discuss their approach to writing fiction – and the influence of black women’s writing on their work.

Bernardine Evaristo has published eight works of poetry and fiction, including The Emperor’s Babe, Soul Tourists, Blonde Roots and Mr Loverman (which she completed while studying for a PhD in creative writing at Goldsmiths). She is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University and was made an MBE in 2009.
Season Butler is a writer and artist born in Washington, DC. Having completed an MA at Bath Spa and a PhD at Goldsmiths, she currently splits her time between London and Berlin. Cygnet is her first novel.
There will be a drinks reception after the event. Free admission – to attend please email english@gold.ac.uk
