Event overview
The reproduction and legitimisation of racism in elite universities.
In this seminar, Kalwant Bhopal and Martin Myers report findings from their research exploring the experiences of 49 graduate students studying at four elite universities in the US and UK. The overarching aim of the research was to identify and evidence how inequalities associated with class and race/racism were reproduced by elite universities. In addition to Bourdieu’s work the research draws upon theoretical tools from Critical Race Theory including interest convergence, intersectionality and whiteness as property (Bell 1980, 1991; Crenshaw 1991; Leonardo 2009).
The seminar focuses on the experiences of students of colour and argues that elite universities are sites in which the most dominant social actors are able to exert their influence so that the interests of white groups are privileged above the interests of students of colour. In this process, elite universities work to deliberately perpetuate whiteness and white privilege.
This is an online seminar. The zoom link will be sent nearer the time to those who registered.
