Adam Mars-Jones in conversation with Francis Spufford about his "semi-infinite" novel Pilcrow, reaching the two thousand page mark with the recent third volume Caret.

Adam Mars-Jones in conversation with Francis Spufford about his "semi-infinite" novel Pilcrow, reaching the two thousand page mark with the third volume Caret, published in August of 2023. The blurb of its second volume, Cedilla (2011), compared the enterprise to "a coral reef made of a billion tiny Crunchie bars". Subjects likely to crop up in the conversation include comedy, disability and confectionery (not easy to avoid if you have an actual chocolate bar in your name).

Adam Mars-Jones has written a dozen books since his fiction debut in 1981 with Lantern Lecture. He is a research professor of creative writing at Goldsmiths.
Francis Spufford's 2016 novel Golden Hill won a hat-trick of prizes (the Costa first novel prize, Desmond Elliott Prize and Ondaatje prize). His most recent novel is Cahokia Jazz, 2023. He too is a professor of (English and) creative writing at Goldsmiths
