Dr Cassie Hazell, University of Surrey, will present her work on the U-Doc Project, Understanding the mental health of Doctoral Researchers

In this seminar, hosted by Goldsmiths Psychology Department, Dr Cassie Hazell will focus on the mental health of doctoral researchers - an essential topic for all postgraduate students and their supervisors.

Abstract:
In recent years there have been many headlines describing a ‘mental health crisis’ amongst doctoral researchers – but what was the research supporting these claims? With funding from the Office for Students, we launched the U-DOC project. The overall aim of U-DOC was to better understand the mental health status, as well as the protective and risk factors associated with poor and good mental health in Doctoral Researchers (DRs). We used a mixed methods approach to conduct the largest online survey of DRs ever conducted and the first of its kind in the UK. In this talk, I will present the findings from the U-DOC project, consider the implications of this work, and discuss our next steps.

Biography:
Dr Cassie Hazell is a lecturer in Clinical Psychology at the University of Surrey. She completed her PhD at the University of Sussex on the topic of guided self-help for people distressed by hearing voices. She has since completed postdoctoral positions at the University of Sussex, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and the University of Oxford - all in the area of mental health and mostly working on clinical trials.
