The six writers shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2024 reading from and discussing their novels

With readings from Mark Bowles, Jonathan Buckley, Rachel Cusk, Neel Mukherjee, Lara Pawson, Han Smith

'Wildly different and yet unified by a restless curiosity about form, the shortlist for the Goldsmiths Prize 2024 demonstrates how the novel never stays still, always searching for new ways to tell stories that matter.

From the violence of everyday matter to the question of what it means to dare to make art; from the risk and resistance of memory to the slipperiness of the stories we tell about others; from the fury and the vulnerability of the inner voice to the devastating repercussions of the choices that we make out of a desire for interconnection and empathy. These novels ask uncomfortable questions while nonetheless finding exuberance and joy in a form that makes such questioning both possible and pleasurable: the novel at its most novel.'

(Dr Abigail Shinn, Chair of Judges)
