Event overview
Much western journalism and its scholarship presents its principles as universal – claiming objectivity, professionalism, and press freedom as neutral ideals. Yet, these systems of representation obscure the ways journalism has been complicit in upholding the structural logics of colonialism, racism and the capitalist logics that produce them.
“Towards a Decolonised Journalism: Lessons from the Black Radical Tradition” brings together thinkers, writers, and practitioners who challenge the limitations of liberal media theory and practice. Drawing from histories of anti-colonial resistance, this discussion will explore how the Black Radical tradition offers not just critique — but also tools for rebuilding journalism as a liberatory practice.
* Dr Omega Douglas will be discussing ideas from her new book, The Racial Dynamics of Reporting Africa Colonial and Decolonial Practices in Mainstream Western News Media
* Dr Marcela Pizarro Coloma will be screening her animation film project Race Historicised: Epistemologies of Colour, which showcases the life and work of towering figures who have contributed to the anti-colonial struggle
Patties and empanadas and wine will be served.
All welcome!
