Event overview
A seminar on how the war on Gaza has been framed in Germany with Dr. Mandy Tröger & Dr. Kerem Schamberger
Across Europe – and particularly in Germany – the war on Gaza has become a defining test of free expression, media responsibility, and political courage. While Palestinian civilians face catastrophic violence, public debate within Germany is increasingly shaped by state policy, accusations of anti-Semitism, and institutional pressure on those who speak in solidarity with Gaza. New parliamentary resolutions have blurred the boundary between combating hate and suppressing dissent, shaping how Gaza can be discussed in journalism, academia, and cultural life.
Germany holds a powerful role in Europe’s political landscape, often framing itself as a guardian of human rights. Yet in the context of Palestine, it is setting precedents for restricting speech, cancelling events, and disciplining those who challenge its official stance. Understanding these dynamics is essential not only within Germany, but for activists, journalists, and scholars worldwide who face similar tactics of silencing, defamation, or criminalization when advocating for Palestinian rights.
This event brings together two leading voices who have confronted these issues directly:
● Dr. Mandy Tröger – Media scholar and author of Policies of Deterrence, who examines how the so-called anti-Semitism resolutions function as tools of deterrence for German media, leading to self-censorship, fear, and the shrinking of critical discourse on Gaza.
● Dr. Kerem Schamberger – Communication researcher and long-time activist, who has personally faced institutional backlash for his advocacy. He will examine coverage of the genocide in leading German media outlets and highlight how migrant and dissident voices are marginalized in the German public, and connects these repression tactics to broader struggles against racism, nationalism, and colonial power.
By tracing Germany’s role in redefining what can – and cannot – be said about Gaza and beyond, the discussion opens a space for global solidarity and defense of journalistic freedom, academic integrity, and political dissent.
