Event overview
Eighteen graduating artists from MA Photography Practice at Goldsmiths present new work across the expanded field of photography.
The MA Photography Practice Degree Show presents the final major projects of eighteen graduating artists, the culmination of a year of intensive making, critique and research at Goldsmiths, University of London.
The programme asks what photography is and does now, in a culture where images circulate as data, machines make pictures for other machines, and the camera is only one of many ways an image comes into being. Students work through these questions in practice. Some print in the darkroom, using experimental and cameraless processes to test the medium at its material edge. Some stage and perform for the camera. Others work in moving image, installation and printed matter, including artist books and zines designed and made on the programme. Traditional photographic routes sit alongside this expanded work as equals; the question is never which medium, but what the work needs.
This diverse and committed cohort bring different visual cultures and different stakes in the image. Their projects have been developed through sustained individual tutorials, group critique, and conversations with visiting artists working at the front of the field. Eighteen artists, eighteen distinct positions, shown together.
The show runs alongside the wider Goldsmiths degree shows and is open to all. It will be of interest to anyone considering postgraduate study in photography, anyone working with images, and anyone curious about where the medium is going.
