Collective 22, is a group of students from the MA in Image and Communication programme at Goldsmiths, one of the major Colleges of the University of London. Along with being named as one of the UK's CoolBrands five times, six of our alumni have won the prestigious Turner Prize
Goldsmiths is reputed for being a major cultural force, having produced the majority of the Young British Artists. The MA in Image and Communication is no exception. Collective 22 is a unique concoction of 18 different nationalities hailing from artistic backgrounds that range from fashion to digital animation, approaching subjects in creative and unconventional ways while maintaining the highest academic standards in research and practice.
The members of Collective 22 work cooperatively and individually using photography, video, animation and interactive media. The group exemplifies new media possibilities, pushing industry-oriented media tools to the edges of contemporary arts practice. From archive installations dealing with Beirut's ravaged buildings due its civil war, to artistic explorations of the United Kingdom's surveillance industry, to videos showing human life through geometry and choreography, and a British/Indonesian's investigations on the concept of "home" through photography and video narratives. All twenty-one artists are concerned with diverse elements of image-making. The final exhibit will bring you the best of what these emerging international media arts practitioners have to offer.
MA Image and Communication is a programme that encourages accomplished and creative students to research and develop the new boundaries of image-making made possible by technological change within the context of post-industrial culture. Students work with a wide range of media producing both still and durational images using photography and/ or electronic graphics.
