ABOUT ANATOMY OF FAILURE
A fragmentary biopic on Carlos Castaneda, 60ies cultural icon and author of The Teachings of Don Juan turns into a reluctant journey of self-discovery. Framed within the disappointment of a failed romance, the filmmaker goes in search of five disappeared women, believed to have been part of Castaneda’s ‘harem’, trying to find out what hooked them on the cultish guru figure. In a series of Californian road trips her projected realities become as contradictory as the wildly differing characters in the film. She meets a concoction of Castaneda associates who are all invested in telling her about the man. But what remains in shadow is the story of the disappeared women. Finally a bizarre encounter with a police officer, investigating the discovery of bones in Death Valley belonging to one of the missing women, becomes the turning point at which the filmmaker faces some uncomfortable ‘truths’ she was unaware of, about herself. Whilst thematically universal, touching on failures in love, power relationships, and the culture of belief, the film is fittingly placed against a Californian backdrop, with Los Angeles as the inexhaustible epicentre of myth making and new religions.
