Jackie Rattray - 'A Painter Playing with Poetry: The Case of Benjamin Palencia'

Avant-garde activity in Spain involved a flourishing interchange of ideas across the arts. In the case of the painter Benjamin Palencia, this interdisciplinary drive arose partly through the influences of poet friends such as Federico Garcia Lorca, the impact of Surrealism during his time in Paris and the need to explore a form of expression that would compliment his painting. This paper will analyse the poetic output of Palencia in relation to his painting.
