Political campaigner, hardworking journalist, father of ten children, actor, playwright, newspaper editor and phenomenally productive novelist, Charles Dickens was famous in his lifetime and is still widely read today. Ahead of his bi-centenary next year, Claire Tomalin discusses his life and achievement.

Claire Tomalin was literary editor of the New Statesman and the Sunday Times. Since her first biography, of Mary Wollstonecraft, she has written several more highly acclaimed Lives, including Jane Austen, Katherine Mansfield, Thomas Hardy and Samuel Pepys.
