Goldsmiths Literature Seminar

Adi Drori-Avraham (Goldsmiths)

Heidgger and Levinas were both interested in the question of privation and its relation to alterity. Their approaches to this question, as the paper will show, indicates their different attitudes to the meanings of the human and human language. This paper will trace Heidegger's discussion of privation in The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics, Derrida's reading of these passages in his Of Spirit and will consider Levinas's own ideas in relation to both.

The image which is shown here, of the lizard and stone, relates to Heidegger's thesis explored in The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics, that "The animal is poor in world".
