A Sociology Seminar series on questions around big data and data visualisations

Presenter: Lisa Koeman, PhD student, Department of Computer Science, UCL

In an ideal world, members of a community would be cohesive and equal. However, in reality many communities have to cope with socioeconomic differences that can cause tensions. In our study, we challenged a community’s perceptions and the reality of one such divide demarcated by a railway bridge in their street. We designed and deployed novel interactive voting technology in the shops along both ends of the street and displayed the results as public visualisations in the street. This combination elicited unspoken views, opinions and attitudes about aspects of the street community. Our findings show how this low-tech, low-cost approach not only successfully provokes discussions amongst community members, but also evokes curiosity and challenges peoples’ perceptions of the community they live in. Both residents and participating local businesses found it informative and thought provoking. Our study has ‘woken up’ an urban community where “most people would not bat an eyelid normally”.
