Event overview
This talk is part of a seminar series for 'Transmissions and Entanglements' - a research project about new technology practices, inventive methods and knowledge exchange organised by Kat Jungnickel and supported by the ESRC.
In this talk, Dr Genevieve Bell will continue her historical explorations of early technologies and infrastructures and about the relationships between technologies as imagined and embodied. Here she is interested in the various histories of electricity’s early roll-out, and the role of social and political organizations there-in. In particular she takes a comparative approach to make sense of the various governmental, social and historical agents and mechanisms that helped moved electricity from the laboratory to the home.
Genevieve Bell is a well known anthropologist, working at the intersection of culture and technology. Australian by birth, she runs one of Intel’s premier research and development labs in the United States, and is the author of a range of works, including Divining a Digital Future, co-authored with Paul Dourish, out of MIT Press.
