In this paper Abby Day will trace a 'geneology of belief' and report on her research into the social impact of 'believing in belonging'

How do sociologists and anthropologists understand 'belief' and what impact does their understanding have on how religion is understood in the disciplines?

In this paper Abby Day will trace a 'geneology of belief' and report on her research into the social impact of 'believing in belonging'. It is more about social relations, exclusions and inclusions than gods . . . This paper is basically an overview of the key concepts in her book 'Believing in Belonging: Social Identities in the Modern World' Oxford University Press 2011 (pbk 2013).
